More than 37 million people – adults, hard working families with children and seniors are living on the brink of hunger in every community across the United States.

In September, communities nationwide will remember the millions of people suffering from hunger or food insecurity by recognizing Hunger Action Month. Hunger Action Month is a time for everyone in the United States to unite in sup-port of ending hunger--one of the most solvable social issues in this country.

You can do your part by finding thirty ways to fight hunger in the thirty days of September. Attend the Interfaith Service, donate produce, fill your Scouting for Food bag, watch 30 Days on Minimum Wage, volunteer to teach children about hunger, organize a food drive at your place of work, or chose to fight hunger in your own unique way!

You can be a part of the solution to end hunger by participating in the Fourth Annual Interfaith Hunger Awareness Service: “Give a Little, Feed a Lot,” on Sep-tember 24, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of
Lourdes Church on Hill Avenue. A Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank truck will be onsite to accept your free will offering or donation of non-perishable food and personal care items. “Just One Can”

Pauline Lenz, area leader for the Toledo Neighborhood Block Watch 121A, has started a pilot program called “Just One Can.” She’s asking all attendees of her monthly Neighborhood Watch meetings to bring in one non-perishable food item to benefit the Food Bank. Pauline’s Neighborhood Block Watch meets the 3rd Monday of every month and works to reduce crime and foster a sense of togetherness within the community. This month Pauline will facilitate a roundtable dicussion at the meeting. The area she leads is the largest in Toledo, consisting of more than 1,800 homes. Pauline started this program to emphasize that it only takes one can to help someone and every donated item is appreciated, regardless of size or amount. For questions please contact Jennifer Mirelez at 419-242-5000 ext. 216 or e-mail jmirelez@toledofoodbank.org.

Orchestras Feeding America

The Toledo Symphony will participate in Orchestras Feeding America, the first national food drive involving America’s symphony orchestras. The Toledo Symphony will be collecting non-perishable food at concerts taking place on March 27, 28 and 29 at the Peristyle. The food will be donated to the Food Bank. More than 140 orchestras have come together to combat hunger in their communities through Orchestras Feeding America, organized by the League of American Orchestras. The drive was inspired by the true story of the upcoming film The Soloist and is part of the Social Action campaign Participant Media is facilitating for the film.

On Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, the Toledo Symphony, under Christoph Campestrini, performs music of power and passion; Tchaikovsky’s searing “Romeo and Juliet” and Wagner’s “Tristan and Isolde” and “Tannhauser”. The program will also include Kikta’s beautiful new Harp Concerto featuring the Orchestra’s Nancy Lendrim. On Sunday March 29, the Toledo Symphony will celebrate the immense musical talent of our region’s young people in a special Toledo Symphony concert. Toledo students and winners of the 2008 Young Artists Competition, Thomas Stuart, violin and Andrea Darmahkshi, piano are featured soloists in music by Saint-Saens and Greig. The Toledo Youth Orchestra will join the Toledo Symphony on stage for side-by-side performances of Berlioz’s Hungarian March and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.

Members of the Toledo Area Real Estate Industry Work Together to Provide Food 4 Babies

Due to the rising number of layoffs in the Toledo area, various real estate professionals have joined together over the past few months to start this great program. For the first time, many parents are facing the hardship of being unable to afford formula and diapers for their babies. As a result, some parents have resorted to watering down their infant’s formula to make it last until their next paycheck, unaware that adding extra water to an infant’s diet can be deadly! One can of formula costs between $15.50 and $22.00 and usually lasts less than a week. One month’s supply of diapers and wipes can cost anywhere from $75.00 to $100.00 per child.

Please help Food 4 Babies by donating diapers, wipes or cash. Because of health regulations and expiration dates the Food Bank does not accept direct donations of baby food or formula. Baby food and formula will be purchased with the cash donations.

Drop-off sites are located at First Capital Title Services, Inc., Ameriway Mortgage, Bank of Maumee, all Chicago Title locations, Country Wide Mortgage, Home Builders Association of Greater Toledo, REMAX Masters, all REMAX Preferred Associates, REMAX Alliance Premier, Danberry Realtors, Wells Bowen, Loss Realty Group, DiSalle Real Estate, REMAX Central, Sulfur Springs and the Food Bank.
